More about Led Zeppelin IV Vinyl LP

It doesn’t get much more iconic than this. Led Zeppelin IV — the, uh, fourth album from the Godfathers of modern-day rock ‘n’ roll. Technically an untitled project, just like the band’s first three albums, Led Zeppelin IV was recorded in the wintertime between December 1970 and February 1971 in the historic country house of Headley Grange, Led Zeppelin’s recording headquarters for much of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Due to the informal nature of the recording setup, the band was able to experiment with different types of styles and arrangements. That’s evidenced on record. The album is a beautiful and elegant collection of sounds, roaring to life with “Black Dog” and possibly the most recognizable guitar riff of the last 50 years as Robert Plant’s vicious tenor tears over the top.

Then, we power forward with “Rock and Roll” — a song that’s quite literally defined the genre — and an epic, squirrely bit of flower power with “The Battle for Evermore.” Eventually, we settle into the dramatic “Stairway to Heaven.” That’s the one you know, no doubt. You’ve gone winding down that road. Later, “Going to California” offers an adventurous folk hippy anthem before settling down and closing with the blues, a hard rock cover of the Memphis Minnie blues song “When the Levee Breaks.”

Upon release, not only did Led Zeppelin IV shoot up the charts — mind you, where it stayed for decades, still today remaining one of the highest selling albums of all time — but the critics adored it. Rolling Stone gave it five stars, Billboard called it a “powerhouse,” and even Mr. Rock Critic himself Robert Christgau eventually came around on the brilliance, changing his mind on his initial lukewarm review to calling it a “masterpiece.”

And how doesn’t that remain true? These days, people are still chasing the sound Zeppelin found in that English countryside. There’s something so singular about Led Zeppelin IV that it's essentially become a genre in and of itself. Sure, snobs might clown it — considering it’s one of the highest-grossing albums of all time, we suppose that’s justifiable on some level — but those snobs are just that: snobs. Screw ‘em! The song remains the same: Led Zeppelin IV rips eternally, and will continue to define rock and roll for all the decades to come. A vital pillar for any record collection.
