Picture a garden, with a string quartet gently playing in one corner: that’s one kind of sound garden.
Now set it on fire, give the string players electric guitars played through huge stack amplifiers and sit one down at a big, boomy drum kit. Now you’ve got yourself a real Soundgarden.
Formed in 1984 in Seattle, Soundgarden defined grunge a few years before other famous acts like Nirvana (formed in 1987), Alice In Chains (1987), and Pearl Jam (1990) just had to copy them. They inspired the biggest genre of the 90s with their muddy, distorted guitars, big drum sounds, dark, melodic vocals, and burning intensity. If you like headbanging along to music, Soundgarden is the band for you.
While once grunge was an underground scene, Soundgarden managed to “Blow Up The Outside World” in the 90s. If you don’t love the two grammy-award winning singles on their 1994 album Superunknown, then you’re probably a “Spoonman” just waiting for the “Black Hole Sun” to come and wash away the rain for you. They’re more than just Ultramega OK, and if you ask me, Soundgarden “Outshined” all the other grunge acts that followed them.
The band tragically “Fell On Black Days” with powerhouse frontman Chris Cornell’s suicide in 2017. Nonetheless, Cornell and Soundgarden have “Zero Chance” of ever being forgotten, having stamped their iconic mark on grunge music forever.
