Billy Strings was born to pluck. As a master of the guitar, banjo, and mandolin, the young country artist has established himself as a dynamic singer and instrumentalist who touches a wide range of genres— blending the genres of rock, country, and psychedelia to fuse together an innovative bluegrass sound. Strings was born William Apostol in 1992 in Lansing, Michigan. As a baby, his family moved around — first to Morehead, Kentucky for a bit before later settling back in the thumb state in the town of Muir, a small town smack in the heart of the Lower Peninsula. He was surrounded by music throughout his childhood. Both his father and uncle were successful musicians, and he was indoctrinated into the life of plucking at the age of four when his father gifted him a second-hand guitar. His fingers took to it immediately, and by the age of 6 he was playing with his father’s bluegrass buddies. He was so successful that his aunt nicknamed him Billy Strings — a moniker that would come to define him for the rest of his life.

Strings’ youth was not without struggle. In a working class background, he found himself surrounded by the pressures of drugs and other substances, and has spoken in interviews about how that time encouraged him to pursue a more successful path. After he completed high school, he moved to Traverse City, a small city in Northern Michigan with a vibrant music and art scene. He started performing for open mics, selling Billy Strings vinyl LPs after shows, and eventually impressed some musicians in the local bluegrass scene. Word of his talent spread and he caught a bit of momentum, eventually moving himself to Nashville, where he quickly made a splash. By the time 2016 rolled around, he’d independently released a couple records, which culminated in 2018’s Home — a Billy Strings album that would go on to win the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Academy Awards.

Since, Strings’ notoriety has only grown. Through his hard work on the road, he’s developed a considerable reputation as a live performer. At this point, he’s collaborated with a whole slew of young artists, and has received a sign of approval from the Grateful Dead by playing in Bill Kruetzmann’s band Billy & the Kids. He released another Billy Strings album called Renewal in 2021 — a critically acclaimed record that’s only added more fuel to Strings’ brewing success.
