Ah, the good ol’ Grateful Dead, the great American band. A group so closely tied to counterculture over the last 50 years that they’ve come to define what it means to be… well, a little bit weird. What else is there to be written? The influence is vast and wide and still going strong. This cast of characters — Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, not to mention a swath of keyboard players throughout the years, or the lyrical poetry written by Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow — have provided blanket of comfort in a world gone sour, song after song and year after year since the band emerged from the psychedelic space of the mid-60s in San Francisco.
The band recorded music steadily over five decades, building their life out on the road. During countless journeys across highways of America, the group played over 3000 shows — and encouraged their fans, better known to the world as Deadheads, to tape each one. Out of those emerged thousands of recordings, helping set a formula for how to approach recording and playing live music. This approach created a living, breathing culty fanbase that became as synonymous with the music as Jerry himself.
Sturdy and reliable, the Dead are always there if you need ‘em. Maybe it’s a ‘77 “Loser,” or an ‘89 “Mississippi Half-Step,” or that odd period in the early 90s when Bruce Hornsby joined up, or maybe it’s just time to play American Beauty in full. Whatever! It’s the Dead, and they’re always ready to go. This is a collection of musicians that played relentlessly, their hard work and dedication matched only by their love of a good time. Grateful Dead music brought the psychedelic mindset into the mainstream, an escape for the seekers and searchers in life. It’s not too strange to want more in this life, to explore and color outside the lines without judgment. That might not seem too radical these days, but it took us some dedicated weirdos to get here. Thank you Jerry, indeed.
