Following the initial waves of rock’n’roll in the 60s, artists branched out more than ever before in the 70s to define and invent countless genres. They took the best ideas of the years before and pushed them harder, faster, and darker in a million new directions, creating a golden age for music.

Most explosive of all were the legendary hard rock albums that peppered the first half of the decade. Rock icons Led Zeppelin climbed the “Stairway to Heaven” and burned brighter than ever, releasing some of their hottest albums ever including Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti. Just listen to “Rock and Roll” and you’ll enter the Houses of the Holy-est hard rock band ever.

Psychedelic legends Pink Floyd, founded in the 60s, reached the peaks of their success in the 70s, releasing all-time album after album. In the span of the decade, they topped the charts with Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). That’s right: all your favorite Pink Floyd albums were released within 6 years of each other. You don’t need no education to appreciate any of these classics.

Sprouting from the growing hard rock and psychedelic rock scenes came arena rock bands like Boston, Foreigner, and Journey, and face melters like Van Halen and AC/DC. You can praise the guitar gods for these Jukebox Heroes enlightening us with their upbeat, soaring hits.

Besides being the golden age of rock, the 70s saw the advent of new genres. Black Sabbath invented soul-crushing heavy metal, releasing their four most popular albums in the first two years of the decade. In 1976, the release of the fast-paced, moody Ramones album invented punk rock. And let’s not forget the most iconic genre of the late 70s - Disco.

With DJs playing artists like the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, and KC and The Sunshine Band, you were sure to find something fun to dance to on your night out. The 70s also saw the rise of two of Motown’s greatest superstars: Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.

All these influences changed pop music, making it more creative, interesting, and shiny. Albums by glam kings David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen topped the charts throughout the decade. These guys will forever be my Heroes. Other acts like Steely Dan and Steve Miller Band took pop into jazzy, unexplored new psychedelic territory.

If you were lucky enough to be alive (and not deaf) during the 70s, you’ll recall an era where you’d run to the record store every time you heard about the latest release. You’d bring it home, set it down on your record player, and tune into the greatest music you’d ever heard for a while. You’ll get that same satisfaction when your online vinyl order from Binaural Records is delivered to your door. No phones, no CDs, no iPods, no distractions: the 70s are the essence of what music is all about.
