Miles Davis – My Funny Valentine: Miles Davis in Concert
60th Anniversary Edition – MoFi SuperVinyl LP (180g 33RPM)

Limited Edition of 3,000 Numbered Copies

Mastered at Mobile Fidelity’s California studio and pressed on MoFi SuperVinyl, this 60th Anniversary Edition of My Funny Valentine plays with stunning depth, lifelike clarity, balanced tones, and acoustic intimacy. Housed in a deluxe Stoughton jacket and pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing, the album benefits from SuperVinyl’s ultra-low noise floor and precise groove definition, faithfully reproducing the experience of live jazz in an acoustically ideal hall.

A landmark live recording, My Funny Valentine: Miles Davis in Concert marks several historic turning points. Captured on February 12, 1964, at New York’s then-new Philharmonic Hall, the benefit concert was held to support voter registration efforts in the South, raising funds for the NAACP, the Congress of Racial Equality, and SNCC. Occurring just months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the concert takes on an elegiac, emotionally resonant quality. Davis, who had expressed admiration for Kennedy, seems to channel divine inspiration—particularly on the haunting title track, which feels like an homage to the fallen leader.

This performance represents the final time on record that Davis would perform standards rather than original compositions. It is also one of the last recordings featuring the same band that created Seven Steps to Heaven. The ensemble includes pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams—all future pillars of Davis’ Second Great Quintet—and the underrated tenor saxophonist George Coleman, described by jazz critics Brian Morton and Richard Cook as “one of the unsung heroes of modern jazz.” His playing here is both subtle and commanding, lending sophistication and lyrical depth to the set.

Unlike the fiery energy of its companion album Four & More, My Funny Valentine focuses on warm ballads and sensitive, introspective pieces. Davis, often criticized for his later avant-garde explorations, is in full poetic form here. His trumpet—muted, melancholic, masterful—paints with intricate brushstrokes. The group performs with intuitive cohesion, delivering emotionally charged solos, spontaneous brilliance, and telepathic interplay.

This MoFi reissue, cut from a ¼" / 15 IPS analog master to DSD 64 to analog console to lathe, offers a transparent window into one of the most poignant live recordings of Davis' career.
